Majestic mountain scapes covered in snow hearken back to the hardcore adventurer that was the legend of Jeremiah Johnson. Both for his individual, stalwart toughness in these high elevations and that the movie was filmed close to here, the name seems appropriate for this inspirational Nutnfancy Wilderness Adventure. These snow covered elevations are hard to get to but give solitude once there. Prepare for lots of work because up here nothing comes easy, whether snow shoeing in up steep slopes, hauling up a big load of equipment to test, making a fire, or securing food. Allie the Mountain Dog is back in action in this trip and she does well; not having her hikable has put most of my outdoor excusions on hold. We set out to make a snow cave. Conditions are not right for it, requiring too much time and work, and logic demands I implement our Plan B It is takes us to a high alpine meadow where stunning views are captured forever on my camera. Firemaking, signaling demos, knife testing, .22 pack rifle proof of concept, and other wood work ensue...Alllie's not much help in it all but provides perfect companionship and amusement as she addresses our wildlife visitors. Our grub is good and helps make the outing even more memorable: grilled chicken stands in for Ruffed Grouse or Ptarmigan and some fire-roasted beans help out. Our adventure is made easier with some modern outdoor equipment and tools but in most ways the age old concept of man and dog surviving in nature has not changed, facing the elements together.
