Since the global financial meltdown, times are hard for everyone. All the talk both in Britain and America is about redundancies, house repossession and cuts, cuts and more cuts. Now six hardy souls from Oregon -- all of whom are have on the edge of financial ruin -- have decided to take matters into their own hands. They're going to head into the wilds of Alaska and mine for gold. Todd Hoffman and his father are leading a group of greenhorn miners to Porcupine Creek deep in the Yukon territory with all their equipment and supplies. Problem is the guys have only got five months to get the mine up, running and strike gold before the Alaskan winter closes in, and these rookies have to do everything from warding off bears to building homes for their families. Plus, the thing is about friendship and money is never to mix the two -- so tempers become pretty frayed. During the series, a number of setbacks, including near death illnesses, equipment broken by the team because they don't know how to use it and ultimatums like having to find $10,000 of gold in two days or the whole community shuts down, keeps everyone tense to say the least.
